What Is the Hit the Road Dude Meme?

The 2025 TikTok of an angry landowner in a pickup truck kicking out fishermen, and the AI pet version that brought it back in October 2026.

Last updated: 2026-10-17

Hit the Road Dude is a TikTok meme from a real 2025 clip: a man in a white pickup truck pulls up to two fishermen at a pond, hears that they thought it was state property, answers “State?”, tells them to hit the road, dude, and says it’s private property. The clip has passed 20 million views and is also known as “State Property” and “Lock ’Em Up”. In October 2026 it came back as an AI trend in which people put their cat, their dog or themselves in the driver’s seat and keep the original audio. Hit the Road Dude AI makes that video from one photo.

Where the Hit the Road Dude Meme Started

The clip was posted on TikTok by @bird28thegr8 on August 21, 2025 with the caption “Angry grandpa kicks me out my fishing spot 😂”. It is filmed on a phone by one of the fishermen, looking up at the driver’s window of a white pickup parked on the grass. The man asks whether they have written permission from the owner, asks who told them they could fish there, and when he hears “state property” the conversation turns into the lines everyone now quotes. Later in the video he says the owner told him to “lock ’em up”.

According to Know Your Meme, the video reached about 13.7 million views in its first three weeks. The man in the truck is a private person, not an actor or an influencer, which is part of why the clip feels so real.

The Lines Everyone Quotes

  • “Who told you you could fish here?”
  • “I thought it was state property.”
  • “State?”
  • “Hit the road, dude.”
  • “This ain’t no state property. It’s private property.”
  • “Lock ’em up.”

The joke is the timing: a long, disbelieving “State?” and then a calm, final “hit the road, dude”. That is why most remakes keep the original audio and only change who is saying it.

How It Spread in 2025

Within days the audio became a lip-sync sound. On August 24, 2025, @130zay posted one of the first lip-dubs, and by the end of the month a green-screen cutout of the driver was going around, so editors could drop him into courtrooms, traffic jams and anywhere else someone needed to be told to leave. Captions used the format for anything that “needs to be locked up” or anyone who thinks a place belongs to everyone.

Why It Came Back as an AI Trend in October 2026

In early October 2026 the clip resurfaced as edits that replace the driver. Know Your Meme lists an Instagram edit styled like a fantasy video game on October 5 and a Minecraft boat version on October 13 that passed two million likes in a day. AI video tools then made it easy to keep the real footage and swap only the driver, and the most shared versions put a cat or a dog behind the wheel: a serious-looking pet in a plaid shirt telling the fishermen to hit the road is funnier than any person could be.

How the AI Version Works

What stays from the original clip:

  • the white pickup truck, the open window and the trees behind it
  • the handheld phone camera and its movement
  • the timing of every head turn, point and gesture
  • the original audio, word for word

What your photo changes:

  • who sits in the driver’s seat: your cat, your dog or you
  • the face, fur or hair and colors of the driver
  • any hat, bow tie or accessory your pet wears in the photo

Join the Trend Responsibly

  • Use photos of your own pets or yourself, or get permission before putting another person in a video.
  • Do not use photos of celebrities, other public figures or anyone under 18.
  • Don’t use the clip to harass the people in the original video, and label your version as AI-generated when you post it.
